Art Bill of Sale

The art bill of sale (also called the artist bill of sale or sales invoice) is a record of the agreement that you have made with the buyer. It clearly spells out what they are buying and what the expectations are on both sides of the transaction.

Artist Bill of Sale The sample bill of sale attached can be used to record your art sales or you can use as a guideline for creating your own sales invoice.

Completing the Form

When completing this form it is important to have multiple copies - One for the buyer, one for your tax file and one for you art business file. The bill of sale should be used as a record of all your artwork that has been purchased but can aslo be used to track items that were borrowed or lent to galleries.

Another feature that is crutial on an art bill of sale is the statement:
COPYRIGHT AND REPRODUCTION RIGHTS RESERVED BY THE ARTIST. Having this line on the form leaves no room for a misunderstanding as to who retains the print or copyright.

This may also be a good time to mention that you should always keep all invoices, receipts and correspondence in an art file for future reference. You never know when you are going to need to either prove your business income or justify business expenses.
